What to expect 1Q 2025 in terms of ocean freight

Geopolitical events have been shown to have an impact on shipping and supply chains, regardless of where we live. Among the upcoming events that are likely to disrupt the shipping industry are:

✅ Attacks on ships in the Red Sea: These events are expected to continue to affect the global economy in 2025 by forcing many shipping companies to divert their routes, increasing transit times and transportation costs; affecting global supply chains and causing shortages of raw materials and inventories; and,  promoting the insecurity of crew members and the instability of the world economy.

✅ Donald Trump's inauguration of the U.S. presidency in January 2025 could impact the U.S. and global logistics industry if, as expected, a drop in oil prices materializes, import tariffs to the U.S. increases, the relocation of manufacturing is carried out as part of the "Buy American" initiative, and tax incentives are implemented. reductions in environmental regulations that make the U.S. more attractive to foreign investment.

✅ Chinese New Year 2025, between February 10 and 25, 2025, is expected to slow production due to factory closures; congest ports and increase costs and transportation times immediately before and after the holidays; and, cause supply chain disruptions and delays in the arrival of goods.

✅ The Gemini Alliance, formed by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, will begin operating in February 2025. It is expected to reduce transit times and improve delivery safety; greater coverage (290 vessels and a capacity to transport 3.4 million TEUs); the use of artificial intelligence and blockchain to optimize supply chain management; and, increased competition on major East-West routes, which could affect freight rates and the profitability of shipping companies.

✅ Ramadan, between March 1 and 30, 2025, is expected to lower the productivity of factories and transporters in certain sectors due to the reduction in labor activity; increase the demand for certain products before and after the holidays; and generate volatility in the financial and trade markets.

President Donald Trump

Trumps´s victory impact on global logistiscs

Donald Trump's re-election could impact the logistics industry in the United States and the world, with implications for several sectors. In the particular case of maritime transport we have:

✅ Potential fall in oil prices which would boost national and international road transport and would positively impact the international trade of the US with Canada and Mexico. Trump has promised to increase oil and gas production in the United States, which would increase global supply and could reduce prices; His victory could strengthen the dollar, making oil more expensive for countries that use other currencies, pushing down demand and prices; and, its support for fossil energies and could favor the increase of oil production in the United States.

✅ Potential increase in tariffs. During his campaign, Trump promised to impose higher tariffs on imports to protect U.S. industry and encourage local production. This includes tariffs of 60% on Chinese imports and between 10% and 20% on imports from the rest of the world. Its objective is to encourage companies to manufacture in the United States and reduce the trade deficit.

✅ Possible relocation and near-sourcing of manufacturing as a result of increased tariffs on Chinese goods; policies that incentivize local production (Buy American); and, the possible reduction of environmental regulations that could make U.S. production more attractive to some industries.

✅ Reduction of regulation that benefits domestic companies, including reducing the corporate income tax rate to 15%; exempting overtime and tip income from taxes; eliminating taxes on Social Security benefits; and, the aforementioned reduction of environmental regulations.
